The version of 'State of Love and Trust' heard in the film Singles and on its soundtrack was recorded in 1992 and was one of the first songs to be recorded with drummer Dave Abbruzzese. It's awesome.' This version of 'State of Love and Trust' recorded during the Ten sessions appears on Rearviewmirror: Greatest Hits (1991 - 2003) while an early version appears on the 2009 Ten reissue. It has a much trashier, Crazy Horse feel to it. Ament said, 'The version of 'State of Love and Trust' with Dave Krusen on drums is so much better than what ended up being released,' and added, 'He really plays that song in the spirit it was written in. The song was originally recorded during the sessions for Ten with the possible intention of appearing in the film Singles. “It won’t offend him,” Vedder adds.'State of Love and Trust' features lyrics written by vocalist Eddie Vedder and music co-written by guitarist Mike McCready and bassist Jeff Ament. Titled after the day the singer died, it’s a beautiful toast from one modern blues singer to another, and also a scathing decree to the Godsmack set. “So all you fools/Who sing just like him/Feel free to do so now/Because he’s dead,” sings a melancholy Vedder in this stark homage to fallen Alice in Chains frontman Layne Staley, and can be heard roughly four minutes and 20 seconds after “Bee Girl” on Riot Act. Yet “Sad” does serve as one of the reasons why Lost Dogs is a great glimpse into what could have been for any Pearl Jam fan.

Why they left this tune off the album is truly bewildering, given its superiority over a couple of clunkers that made the cut. This outtake from the sessions for 2000’s Binaural kicks off with a little nod to the Middle Eastern roots of Dick Dale before Vedder enters with a narrative told from the perspective (at least in a theory keenly annotated by on Genius) of the lover left behind by the woman at the center of the Binaural single “Light Years”.
